Create content - Lesson guide

A Lesson activity can be used to build structured pathways through content. You can test students' knowledge as they progress and provide alternative content based on their responses.

Build Lesson

Having completed your Lesson settings, select Save and display to begin building the Lesson.

The most common tasks you will be carrying out are Add a content page and Add a question page. If you have a large number of multiple-choice questions and would like students to be offered them in a random order, you may also be interested in the Clusters function.

Add content page

This is a page where the lecturer can provide information for students to move forward in the activity without requiring the student to answer specific questions. The student sees the page's title, some information and then one or more buttons at the bottom to select. When the student selects a button, they go to the next page.

Page title:

  • The title of a content page appears to the student at the top of the page.
  • A lecturer will also see the title in the collapsed edit mode when they are working on the Lesson, and they will also be able to choose the title (and hence this page) from the drop-down jump lists.
  • The title in a content page is also used with the display left menu setting.

Page contents:

  • This is where the lecturer can add page content for the student, making use of the text editor and its multimedia features.
  • Check the arrange content buttons horizontally or uncheck it for them to appear centered vertically.
  • Add media to your Lesson pages using the buttons on the text editor. Note: The number of options available depends on your choice in the Maximum Number of Answers set in Lesson settings.
    • Kaltura MediaSpace: Embed media saved from MediaSpace.
    • Audio: Record up to two minutes of audio using your computer microphone.
    • Video. Record up to two minutes of video using your webcam.
    • H5P: Insert H5P content.

Content 1-5:

  • The Content drop-down menus allow the student to navigate to other pages in the Lesson.
    • Description appears as the button name.
    • Jump will dictate where the student is navigated to when they select the button. If you have already created other pages for your lesson, it will be possible to select these in the Jump dropdown menu. See Jumps (external link: Moodle docs) for more detailed information.
  • Edit up to five Content drop-downs to allow students to navigate the lesson by topic or activity (e.g. Test, Review), or write 'Next' and select Jump: Next Page to prompt students to move forward.

Add question page

This is a page where students can move forward in the Lesson activity by answering specific questions.  From the drop-down menu, you can choose from a variety of question types which will then be added as pages to your lesson:

  • Multichoice: The student is given a question and a list of answers. The answer list will be shuffled every time the question is view by a student. By default, they choose one answer but you can select the box "Multiple-answer" to allow them to choose more than one answer.
  • Essay: Students can write a longer answer as part of the lesson and this can be graded manually by the lecturer. If the main purpose of your lesson is for students to write an essay, consider the Assignment module instead.
  • Matching: This allows you to set up lists that must be matched against other lists, for instance, words, pictures, numbers, etc. The student must match all correctly to receive the score.
  • Numerical: This requires a number as an answer. A number within a range may also be accepted as correct. The range separator to be used is the colon. For example, to accept as correct any number between 10 and 12 (10, 11 and 12) you would input 10:12 in the Answer box.
  • Short answer: A student must provide a single word or short phrase answer. The lecturer must anticipate the possible answers and enter them in the Jump dropdown boxes, using ** wild cards if appropriate.
  • True/false: The student is given a sentence and must decide if it is true or false.

A typical question page could include:

Title - the name the student sees at the top of the question page.
Page contents - the actual question

Edit lesson

Once you have added your first content or question page, you will reach the next screen which displays your page title/type/jumps (i.e. where the buttons/questions take the student to) and actions you can take next:

  • The Actions icons allow you to move (if you have more than one), edit, preview, delete or duplicate your pages.
  • The Add a new page...drop-down allows you to create another page of your choice, including
    • Add a content page
    • Add a cluster
    • Add an end of cluster
    • Add an end of branch
    • Add a question page.

End Lesson

  • To bring the Lesson to a close, select the End of Lesson option from the Jump menu on any relevant pages.
  • When the student comes to the end of a Lesson with questions, they are provided with the option to review the answers to their questions and to view their score in the grades area.
