Structure your module guide

Getting the structure and organisation of your Moodle modules right can help your students find the relevant information at the right time. This guide will help you structure your module.

Rename and update topic/section

Edit section name

  1. Turn editing on.
  2. Select the pencil icon alongside the section name. Update the title and select Enter to save your changes.

Update section summary

  1. Select select the edit icon cog icon above the relevant section.
  2. Add your section summary in the Summary field.
  3. Scroll to the end of the form and select Save changes.

Update General topic

Each module has a General topic or Topic 0. This topic should be used to provide an overview of the module and is an appropriate place to locate module administrative documentation for students. Keep this topic short. Students will have to navigate past it to find module content.

This section cannot be moved, highlighted, hidden or deleted.

  1. Turn editing on.
  2. Select the cog icon  above Topic 0 underneath the Module Dashboard.

  3. Check the Custom box.
  4. Add your preferred title in the Section name field.
  5. Write your text in the Summary field and select Save changes.

Move topic/section

  1. If you are moving sections on a large module, select Close all to close all of the sections.
  2. Select and hold the Move iconCompass icon on top of the section/content to be moved.
  3. Drag the Move icon to the desired location. Release the mouse button. The section will now be shown in its new location.
    • If you are working on a long module, keep the mouse pressed and select the up or down arrow on your keyboard to navigate to the new location for the section. Release the mouse button when the section has reached the correct location.
  4. If you have difficulty opening a section after moving it, turn editing off and on again and you will then be able to open the section.

Hide topic/section

  1. Turn editing on.
  2. Select the eye icon at the top of the section you want to hide. The eye will display with a line through it and the section will be greyed out and display the text Hidden from students.

Delete an unused topic/section

  1. Turn editing on.
  2. Select the Delete icon  at the top of the section you want to delete. Confirm your deletion. If you delete a section it will delete all content and student created content including assignment submissions.
  3. If you accidentally delete a section you can use the Recycle Bin function to try to restore the content.

Highlight live section

This highlight can help students identify the section of the module that they need to be working on. If you are using a weekly format, the current week is automatically highlighted for students.

  1. Turn editing on.
  2. Select the open bookmark icon  at the top of the section you want to indicate as the live section of the module.
  3. The live section will be highlighted width a red line to indicate that it is the live section for staff and students.
