Feedback and grades guide

This guide explains how to access your grades and feedback on Moodle

About feedback and grades

You will be able to access feedback and grades within Moodle once they have been released by your lecturer. You may receive a message indicating that your work has been marked, but you will need to select Grades from the secondary navigation menu above the module name to review your grade and feedback.

What to do with feedback?

Feedback can be given in multiple formats. Not all your feedback will be written; you may receive general feedback on common strengths and areas for development during your lectures or seminars or you could be asked to review model answers to help you to identify how you could improve your assessments. It is important that you read/listen to the feedback that your lecturers or peers provide in order to improve upcoming assignments.

Below are some top tips to help you to make the most of your feedback:

  • Take time to read your feedback and make sure you understand it.
  • Look for patterns in your feedback. What areas are you strongest at? Which areas require development?
  • Revisit the assessment criteria as you read your feedback and start self-assessing your own work. Can you start to identify your strengths and areas for development?
  • You might find it useful to undertake some study skills development before your next assignment. Have a look at the Academic skills information on the Student Hub for information about academic skills workshops and 1-1 study skills sessions.
  • Create an action plan or keep a learning journal to ensure that you keep track of how you plan on using your feedback on future assignments.

Grades and feedback report

The Grades & feedback report will list your individual grades as well as the overall grade for the module you are accessing if this is available. Your grade is displayed in the Grade column and your feedback is displayed in the Feedback column.

To access your feedback:

  1. Select Grades from the secondary navigation menu above the module name.
  2. The Grades & feedback report page opens. This lists all assessments on your module and displays both the grades and the feedback for each of your assignments.
  3. You will be able see feedback left as feedback comments, and/or as feedback files in Word or PDF formats or as a link to feedback left in Turnitin.
  4. You may also receive audio or video feedback which will be available underneath the Feedback comments section.
  5. If your assessments are weighted, i.e. some assignments contribute more to the course total than others, an additional column will display how much each assignment contributes to the course total.

Overview report

  1. You can view an overview of grades for all your modules in the Overview report.
  2. Select Grades from the secondary navigation menu above the module name.
  3. The Grades & feedback report page opens. Open the drop-down menu on the left of the page. Select Overview report.
  4. Please note that the Module total is often hidden so the Grade column may be empty when you view the Overview report.
