Teach with Lecture Capture guide

Explore tips for how to deliver your lecture when it is being recorded and how to support students to learn with Lecture Capture.

Integrate Lecture Capture recordings into learning process

To maximise the effectiveness of Lecture Capture recordings as learning resource, students will need advice on how to interact with the recordings.

Nordmann and McGeorge (2018) suggest that:

  • Recordings are used as a supplementary resource to the lecture.
  • Recordings are reviewed selectively. Students should concentrate on watching sections of the lecture that they want to clarify rather than watching the recording in its entirety.
  • Recordings are reviewed consistently throughout the term and not saved for binge watching prior to exams.

Lecture Capture notes and study features

Echo has a number of features to support students in learning from video content.

  • The Echo player has speed control on playback. Students can use this to move quickly through the parts of the content that they understand and to slow down to review new concepts.
  • Students can place bookmarks and time-stamped notes on the Lecture Capture recording as they are reviewing it. During the next review, students can jump to the section of the recording that they were struggling with.
  • The Echo Study Guide consolidates all the bookmarks and timestamped notes made by a student on each of the Lecture Capture recordings and the notes can be downloaded.

Echo360 mobile app

As well as accessing Lecture Capture recordings from a Moodle module, students can also access recordings via the Echo360 app. The app has a feature to enable them to cache recordings to view offline. This makes the recordings much more flexible for the students as they do not need to be online to watch them.

To use the app, your students must access the link to Lecture Capture from each of their modules via Moodle initially. They can the download and use the app to view and interact with Lecture Capture including caching the recordings for offline viewing. Students do not need to create a password for the app and can login using their City credentials.
