Choose an online assessment type

Overview of the benefits of online assessment and tips to help you plan and select the most appropriate assessment tool.

External Examiner account process

Please provide at least 3 working days notice to get an External Examiner Account set up by IT using the Create/Extend Accounts Request. You will not be able to enrol the external examiner until they have contacted IT for their password and successfully logged onto Moodle in order to create their account.

  1. Request an External Examiner Account by completing the Create/Extend Accounts Request on IT Self Service Portal. Select External Account as the account type.
  2. IT set up External Examiner account.
  3. External Examiner to contact IT for their password.
  4. External Examiner logs in to Moodle with the university credentials to activate their Moodle account.
  5. Once the account is active on Moodle, a Programme Administrator can enrol the External Examiner on the relevant modules. We recommend that you enrol External Examiners in the role of External Examiner.
  6. Unenrol the External Examiner from modules when they have finished the external examination process.

There is guidance available for External Examiners on how to access Moodle, navigate around a module and locate assignment information.

External Examiners & Marking allocation

To re-allocate the submissions to External Examiners

  • Keep marking workflow enabled, set workflow back to "Marking in progress", allocate all assignments to the External Examiner. They will be able to change any previously awarded grades.

OR

  •  Turn off marking allocation once the original marking has been done. This will allow the External Examiner to see all submissions rather than having to allocate them to each one. Make a record of which submissions the first marker graded in case the External Examiner asks them to remark or take another look.
  • To turn off marking allocation, open the assignment settings > Grade and select No next to Marking allocation.
