Choose an online assessment type

Overview of the benefits of online assessment and tips to help you plan and select the most appropriate assessment tool.

External Examiner's guidance

This guidance is intended to help External Examiners quickly access and review submitted and graded work. While not exhaustive, it should provide some initial help on logging in and navigating in Moodle, as well as accessing submissions and reviewing grades. 

Access Moodle

  • Moodle is available from moodle4.city.ac.uk
  • Select City Single Sign On button.
  • Enter your @city.ac.uk email  and password.

Find a module

You'll login to the Moodle Dashboard. From there, you can access your modules in two ways:

  1. Select the My Modules tab. This will show you a Module overview of the modules you are enrolled on. 
  2. Scroll down the Dashboard to the Recently accessed modules and Module overview blocks. Once you access a module, it will be displayed in Recently accessed modules for quick access.

You can filter the Module overview block using the dropdown menus provided.

  • View All or filter starred, removed from view or modules by year
  • Sort by last accessed or Sort by module name.
  • View as Card, List or Summary.

 

Navigate Moodle

  • At the top of each Moodle page you will find a toolbar or a collapsed menu icon if you are accessing on a mobile. It stays at the top of the page wherever you are on Moodle. From here you can return to Dashboard or select a module from the My Modules tab.

  1. Select Grades from the contextual navigation menu . This will take you to Grader report.

  2. Use the Module dashboard to quickly access all Assignments or Quizzes on a module. You can choose to show or hide the Module dashboard.

 

 

View Moodle Assignment submissions

  • Select Assignments from the Module dashboard.
  • Select the link to the relevant assignment.
  • Select View all submissions.
  • To view a student's submission, select the document(s) for that student from the File submissions column.
  • To quickly find the relevant student, use the Surname filter to display relevant students.

View Turnitin assignment submissions

  1. Select Turnitin Assignments from the Module dashboard.
  2. Select the relevant assignment to open the Submission Inbox.
  3. You can use the Search input field to locate a particular student.
  4. Select the link in the Submission Title column for the relevant student to open the assignment and review feedback in Turnitin’s Feedback Studio.

Bulk download submissions

  1. From the Submission Inbox, select the blank page icon or PDF icon in the Export column to download the assignments in a zip file. The PDF icon downloads each assignment as a PDF and the blank page icon downloads the assignments in their original format.

View Quiz results

Quiz grades are available from the module Grader report. Select Grades on the module navigation bar.

You can also review students' quiz attempts.

  1. Select Quizzes from the Module dashboard.
  2. Select the Attempts link alongside the relevant Quiz.

  3. Scroll down the page and select Review attempt underneath the relevant student.

View Video assignment submissions

  1. Select the link to Video Assignments from the Module dashboard.
  2. Select the relevant Video Assignment.
  3. Select Grade submissions.
  4. Click on the video submission for the relevant student from the Last modified (Submission) column.
  5. Play the video that opens.
  6. The grades and feedback are available from the Grade and Comment columns.

View Forum contributions

  1. Select Forums from the Module dashboard.
  2. Select the relevant Forum.
  3. Select Grade users.

  4. The grading interface shows the student’s posts (on the left) and the grade and feedback if provided (on the right).
  5. Select View discussion to view the discussion in context.
  6. Select the search icon on the top right of the screen to search for a particular student and review their contribution to the forum.
