Format your forum view

All users can choose how to display each Forum according to their own preferences.

Organise discussion topic

  • Lecturers can pin important topics for the whole class in a Forum to highlight them.
  • All users can star their favourite discussions.

Format your view of a discussion and replies

You can choose the format you use to view all the replies to an individual discussion topic in a Forum. When you choose how to view a forum, this view is only set for you and not other users.

Organise discussion topics

Staff can pin discussion topics to the top of a Forum.

  1. Open the Forum.
  2. Select the three dots to the right of a topic and select Pin this discussion.
  3. The discussion will appear at the top of the Forum for all participants.

All users can favourite discussion topics in a Forum. If you are a staff member and want to highlight a topic for all participants, pin a discussion instead.

There are two ways to favourite a topic.

  1. Select the star icon on the left of the topic.
  2. Select the three dots to the right of the discussion and select Star this discussion

Once you have starred a discussion, the star icon will turn from white to red. The discussion will appear at the top of the forum, under any pinned discussions.

Star a discussion

To unfavourite, select the star again, or select the three dots and select Unstar this discussion.

Staff can lock a discussion to prevent any further replies.

Lock discussion

  1. Open the Forum.
  2. Select the three dots to the right of a discussion and select Lock this discussion.

 

The discussion will be marked as Locked. To unlock a discussion, select the three dots and select Unlock this discussion.

Select any of the headings on the Forum to sort in ascending or descending order.

You can sort by:

  • Discussion: Sort by discussion title.
  • Started by: Sort by the name of the person who started the discussion topic.
  • Last post: Sort by date and time the last discussion that was replied to.
  • Replies: Sort by the number of replies to a discussion.

     

Pinned and starred discussions stay at the top of the list when the rest of the Forum is sorted. An arrow is shown next to the heading of the column you’ve sorted by.

Format your view of a discussion

  1. Open the Forum.
  2. Open a discussiDisplay replies menu openedon topic.
  3. Select Display replies flat, with oldest first  or Display replies flat, with newest first from the display replies drop-down menu.

The replies to the discussion, and the replies to replies, are shown in in the order they were posted, oldest or newest first. It is not possible to see which reply was posted to a particular reply.

Flat display

  1. Open the Forum.
  2. Open a discussion topic.
  3. Select Display replies in threaded form from the display replies drop-down menu.Display replies drop down menu opened

The discussions and replies to specific replies are displayed below each other. You can track all the replies to a discussion topic. To read the text of the replies, select the title of the reply.

Threaded display

  1. Open the Forum.
  2. Open a discussion topic.
  3. Select Display replies in nested form from the display replies drop-down menu.Display replies drop down menu opened

The text of each reply is displayed. The replies and replies to specific replies are displayed below each other, and indented. You can track and read all the replies to a discussion topic.

Nested display

The experimental nested discussion view is more minimalist and removes the boxes around discussions. To select this view, you must first enable the option in your personal preferences.

  1. Select your profile picture at the top right of the screen to open the user menu.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Choose Forum Preferences.
  4. For the option Use experimental nested discussion view select Yes.
  5. Select Save changes.
  6. Open the Forum.
  7. From the drop-down menu above the discussions, select Display replied in experimental nested form.
