Communicate and collaborate with forums guide

• You can edit, split, delete, reply or reply privately to student posts using the options in the bottom left corner of each post/message. 
  • Edit: Edit a discussion/reply. The post will show that you have edited it.
  • Split: Split the discussion and move the post to a new discussion within the Forum. This is a useful feature if a student introduced a new topic that would be best managed under a new discussion. 
  • Delete:  Delete a discussion/reply.
• A Move this discussion to...menu is available above the discussions and means that you can move a new discussion topic to the right Forum on a module if a student has posted it to the wrong Forum.

1. Open the discussion or reply that you want to respond to.
2. Select Reply to type your response.
3. Type your response and select Post to Forum.

If you need to reply privately to a student, check the Reply privately box.

The relevant student will see the reply on the Forum, but it will not be visible to other students. A message will display: This is a private reply.

Splitting a discussion means that beginning with the post selected and going to the end of that sub-thread, the posts are cut from the current discussion topic and placed into a newly created discussion topic. If a discussion has strayed away from the original topic, splitting the discussion can provide new attention and space for the tangent discussion while keeping the original discussion on topic.

1. Open the Forum.
2. Open the relevant post. (All replies from this point will also be split into a new discussion).
3. Select Split.

   

4. Enter a new discussion name.
5. Select the Split button.

If a student posts a new topic to the wrong Forum you can move that discussion and any replies attached to another Forum on the same module.

1. Open the Forum where the discussion is located.
2. Open the discussion you want to move.
3. Open the Move this discussion to...drop-down menu above the discussions.
4. Choose the Forum that you want to move the discussion to and select Move.

Sections are bolded in the Move this discussion to... menu to help you find the right Forum if you have a number of forums with similar names.
