Moodle Forum and communications guide

Some of the ways to communicate with students and staff using Moodle

About MediaSpace

MediaSpace is the University's online platform for educational video and multimedia content. Staff and students can use MediaSpace to create, upload, share and publish video, audio & images.

You can upload a wide variety of video and audio files, up to 2GB in size. For worry-free uploading, we would advise you keep files below 300MB, which can be helped using the free program Handbrake.

MediaSpace is also integrated with Moodle, so that your MediaSpace files are available to you to submit multimedia assignments. You can also create, upload and share media content on a Moodle Forum.

Access MediaSpace

You can access MediaSpace on Moodle from the link to My Media on the Utilities menu.

In Moodle 3.9, access My Media via the User menu, which opens from the arrow alongside your profile picture at the top of every page on Moodle.

You can also access MediaSpace via its main portal. You will need to login with your username and password.

Upload video messages to a Forum

  1. Open the Utlities menu at the top left of every page on Moodle.
  2. Select My Media.
  3. Select the Add New menu in the top right of the screen.
  4. Select Media Upload.
  5. Follow the steps to choose your file, add a name, description and tags.
  6. Select Save.

Post video message to Forum

Post a video in a new discussion topic

  1. Select the title of the Forum from the module homepage.
  2. Select Add discussion topic to post a new message.
  3. Add a Subject.
  4. In the Message input box write your message. Expand the tool bar on the message editor to find and select the Kaltura Media icon.

Expanded toolbar

  1. Choose your video from MediaSpace and embed it into the forum post. Be patient: The first time you open it, Kaltura may take a minute or more to load.
  2. Select the Select button to the right of the video that you want to embed from your playlist of videos.
  3. The MediaSpace video will be embedded in the Forum post.
  4. Select Post to forum.

Post a video in a reply

  1. To reply to an existing discussion, select the original message.
  2. Select Advanced to open the full editor and follow the steps above.

Moodle waits 30 minutes before sending your message, so you can make changes.  After 30 minutes has elapsed you will not be able to edit your post and if subscription has been enabled your post will be emailed to those on the forum.
