Gamification in Moodle guide

Use concepts and designs from games to make learning more motivating and engaging.

Reward mechanism

Glover (2013b) advises that different types of rewards can appeal to different students so you could consider giving students a choice in the award mechanism.

Badges

Badges can be used to motivate students by applying gamification principles to modules by awarding badges to students for completion of activities. For example, you could award badges to students on completion of induction activities to help engage students in the induction process or you could help students monitor their progress through a module by issuing badges as students complete/pass quizzes or for their participation in forums.

Badges can be designed and granted by Lecturers in modules. Badges can be set up to be awarded automatically once a student meets completion criteria that have been set on a resource or activity or badges can be manually issued by staff on a module. If you are awarding badges based on completion criteria you will first need to set up Activity completion.

Restrict access settings

Restrict access settings can be used to reveal additional content to student based on their participation to an activity or a grade received in an assessed activity.
