Manage groups guide

Explore how to create and use groups and groupings on Moodle.

About bulk creation of Groups

Only those enrolled in the Programme Administrator role on a module or the category in which the module is located can add groups in bulk.

Groups can be added to your module in bulk using a CSV file. Each student can only be added to one group at a time.

If the student is already in a different group in a module, the bulk upload action will assign an additional group to the user.

For example, Student A belongs to 'Group 1' in the module. As part of the bulk upload CSV file you also Student A  to be allocated to 'Group PG'. After bulk upload, Student A will be assigned to 'Group 1' and 'Group PG' in the module.

Confirm student enrolments

You need to ensure that students are already enrolled on the module prior to undertaking bulk upload. To avoid accidentally enrolling students on a module, you need to download a list of students and their email address from Moodle.

You can then use the email address from the spreadsheet to populate the first column of the CSV template required to bulk create the Groups.
