Structure your module guide

Getting the structure and organisation of your Moodle modules right can help your students find the relevant information at the right time. This guide will help you structure your module.

About Label

Labels are text, images or multimedia that are embedded directly on the module page. There are two types of Labels available in Moodle - Label and Label (Bootstrap). Use Label to:

  1. Add structure and organisation to a long section by adding subheadings.
  2. Display a short embedded sound file or video directly in the Introductory topic.

In Moodle 4.5,  Labels are listed as resources within the Module index. You need to add a meaningful title to the Label to help students find and navigate to Labels on the module page. Keep text within Labels short and use:

  1. The Label content description field to provide instructions for resources or activities on your module.
  2. The Page resource to deliver learning content.

Create Label

  1. Select the title of the section to open it on a page.
  2. Turn Edit Mode on.
  3. Select the plus symbol at the end of the section, select Activity or resource. The Activity chooser opens. Select Label from the Resources tab.
    • To add the Label between existing content, hover your mouse until the plus symbol displays. Select Activity or resource and choose the resource from the Activity chooser.
  4. Add the title to the Title in module index field.
  5. Repeat the title at the beginning of the Text field as the Title field only displays in the Module index and not the central column of the module.
  6. Add the content to the Label text field. You can use the text editor features to add formatting and images to your Label.

  7. Select Save and return to module to return to the section page.
  • If a Title isn't added to the Label resource, the first few words of the text in your Label will display in the Module index.
  • We do not recommend embedding Kaltura videos in labels as they do not display as intended.

Development has stopped on Label (Bootstrap). While this resource type currently works in Moodle 4, we recommend limiting your use of Label (Bootstrap) and use Label instead when you want to add in sub-headings to long sections.

  1. Turn Edit Mode on.
  2. Open the section in a page where you want the Label to display by selecting the title of the section.
  3. Select the plus symbol at the end of the section, select Activity or resource. The Activity chooser opens. Select Label (Bootstrap) from the Resources tab.
    • To add the resource between existing content, hover your mouse until the plus symbol displays. Select Activity or resource and choose the resource from the Activity chooser.
  4. Add a Title. This will display in the Module index.
    • For Label (Bootstrap) you do not need to repeat the title in the Content field as the Title field displays in the central column.
  5. Add Content to your label. You can use the text editor features to add formatting to your label.
  6. The Element Type drop-down menu controls how your label displays.
    • Modal: Title displays as a selectable button. Content displays in a pop-up window when selected. Do not use the Modal type if you are not adding content into the pop-up window.
    • Toggle: Title displays as a collapsed heading. Content opens on module page when you select the title.
    • Enhanced: Label Title and Content displays on the module page.
    • Blockquote: A Blockquote can be applied to a piece of text that is a quotation. The Blockquote displays: Label Title and Content on the module page. Content is indented.
  7. You can choose to add an Icon to your label. Select the Icon field and choose the icon that you want to use alongside the title of your Label.
  8. You can input a search term in the Type to filter field to display the most relevant icons e.g. book.
