Structure your module guide

Getting the structure and organisation of your Moodle modules right can help your students find the relevant information at the right time. This guide will help you structure your module.

Rename and update topic/section

Edit section name

  1. Turn Edit mode on.Edit icon highlighted alongside Topic 20
  2. Select the pencil icon alongside the section name. Update the title and select Enter to save your changes.

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Select the three dots next to the section name.
  3. Select Edit section.
  4. Add your section summary in the Summary field.
  5. Scroll to the end of the form and select Save changes.

 

Update General topic

Each module has a General topic or Topic 0. This topic should be used to provide an overview of the module and is an appropriate place to locate module administrative documentation for students.

In Moodle 4, this section can be collapsed in modules using City Course Format. This section is not collapsible in modules using Grid format.

This section cannot be moved, highlighted, hidden or deleted.

  2. Select the three dots menu next to General topic underneath the Module dashboard. Select Edit Section.
  3. Check the Custom box.
  4. Add your preferred title in the Section name field.
  5. Write your text in the Summary field and select Save changes.

Move topic/section

There are three ways to move sections. The easiest method is via the Module index, but we also outline the other methods below.

Please note: you cannot move sections above the Introductory/General section.

Module index

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open the Module index.
  3. You may find it easier to move sections if you first close the sections in the module index by selecting the down arrow next to the section title.
  4. Find the section you want to move in the Module index.
  5. Using your mouse, select and hold the Move icon Arrow icon next to the section.
  6. Drag the content to its new position by holding down the left mouse button.
  7. Drop the content into its new position, by releasing your mouse.
    • If you are working on a long module, keep the left mouse button pressed and select the up or down arrow on your keyboard to navigate to the new location for the content. Release the mouse button when the content has reached the correct location.

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Select the three dots next to the section you want to move.
  3. Select Move.
  4. A list of all sections displays in an overlay window.
  5. Select the section on the module before which you would like to display the new section.
  6. Your section will be moved above the selected section.

Drag and Drop from central column to Module index

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Using your mouse, select and hold the section you want to move.
  3. Drag the section from the central section to its new position in the Module index by holding down the left mouse button.
  4. Drop the section into its new position, by releasing your mouse.
    • If you are working on a long module, keep the left mouse button pressed and select the up or down arrow on your keyboard to navigate to the new location for the content. Release the mouse button when the content has reached the correct location.

Hide topic/section

  1. Turn Edit mode on. Edit section menu displaying edit section, highlight, hide section, move and delete options
  2. Select the section you want to hide.
  3. Select the three dots alongside the content to open the menu.
  4. Select Hide.
  5. The section will display the text Hidden from students.

Delete an unused topic/section

  2. Select the section you want to delete.
  3. Select the three dots alongside the content to open the menu.
  4. Select Delete
  5. Confirm your deletion. If you delete a section it will delete all content and student created content including assignment submissions.
  6. If you accidentally delete a section you can use the Recycle Bin function to try to restore the content.

Highlight live section

This highlight can help students identify the section of the module that they need to be working on. If you are using a weekly format, the current week is automatically highlighted for students.

  2. Select the section you want to highlight.
  3. Select the three dots alongside the content to open the menu.
  4. Select Highlight.
  5. The section will display the text Highlighted. A red line will outline the section on the module page and in the Module index.
    • In Grid format, the text Highlighted will only display in the Module index. A red line will outline the section on the module page and in the Module index.
