How to create a screencast with Kaltura Capture

Narrated PowerPoint or Kaltura Capture

Two common methods for producing a video presentation are:

  • Using Kaltura Capture to record your live PowerPoint presentation and uploading to MediaSpace,
  • Creating a Narrated PowerPoint and exporting as a video and uploading to MediaSpace.

Both can produce great results, but lecturers often ask… which one should I use?

This guide might help you decide and will explain how to create a Kaltura Capture.

Reasons to use Kaltura Capture

  • The quality of the video & audio doesn’t matter too much
  • Your slides don’t have a lot of fine detail in them
  • You don’t mind re-recording the presentation in its entirety if it needs to be changed in future
  • You feel entirely confident in your delivery and don’t worry about little errors in your presentation
  • You feel confident with Kaltura Capture
  • You need to talk over slide transitions
  • You have very little time

Record your PowerPoint presentation using Kaltura Capture > automatically upload video to your MediaSpace > put video onto your Moodle module using the Video Resource.

Reasons to use narrated PowerPoint

  • You need high quality video and audio
  • Your slides have a lot of fine detail in them, e.g. small text, detailed drawings
  • You need more flexibility around changes in the future without the need to re-record the entire presentation again, i.e. the ability to amend individual slides, change the voice over on a slide, add extra slides.
  • You don’t feel confident in your delivery, and would like the opportunity to redo sections of your show if you make mistake
  • You enjoy and feel comfortable with PowerPoint
  • You don’t talk over slide transitions
  • You have a little extra time

Create your narrated PowerPoint > export as a video > (re-compress using Handbrake if very large) > manually upload video to your MediaSpace > put video onto your Moodle module.
