Participate in live online lectures guide

Explore the Virtual Classrooms available and how to participate in live online lectures.

About live streaming

A Lecture Capture live streamed lecture allows students to participate in a face-to-face lecture on campus and enables students who are not on campus to watch a lecture online in real time. Live streaming is supported on the most recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.

Access live stream

  1. Login to Moodle and open the relevant module. 
  2. Your lecturers may add one single link to Lecture Capture which includes all past recordings and scheduled recordings and live streams for your module or they may link to each recording individually.
  3. Select the link to Lecture Capture from the relevant section of your Moodle module.
    • Alternatively, select the Lecture Capture link from the Module dashboard. This will display all Lecture Capture recordings on the module. Select the relevant link. You may have to unblock pop-ups for Lecture Capture.
    • On Grid format, open the Block drawer and navigate to the Activities block, select the link to Lecture Capture. You may have to unblock pop-ups for Lecture Capture.
  4. Select the link Open in new window. The recordings and live streams associated with this module will open in a new tab.
  5. A list of the lectures for the module that have been recorded and that are scheduled for recording and/or streaming will display in Moodle.
  6. If the lecture has been scheduled to go live at a later time, you will see a grey LIVE button. selecting the grey LIVE button opens up a screen with a countdown timer to the live stream.
    • If you join prior to the start of the live stream check the box to Automatically join when stream starts.
  7. If the lecture is currently live, you will see a pink broadcast icon to the left of the title. Selecting this icon will open a screen where you can choose how to join the live stream

  8. Select your option to join the live stream.
    • If you are accessing off campus, select Remotely and press the Join Session button. This will prioritise the content from the live stream.
    • If you are accessing within the face-to-face lecture, select In Person and press the Join Session button. This will prioritise collaboration and note taking and will mute the audio. Do not unmute.

If you experience lag while viewing the live stream, you will be presented with a notification that you are out of synch and to click to get back in synch. Select the Out of Synch button to catchup with the live stream.

Remote live stream player

If you selected to join the live stream remotely, the content will be prioritised helping you to follow along with the lecture. You can also take notes and your lecturer may open up discussions and questions directly on the live stream. These options are available on a panel on the right.

There are three tabs along the top of the open panel on the right.

  1. The first tab is for notes,
  2. the second is for discussion and questions (where enabled) and
  3. the third option displays who has joined the live stream and their role - instructor or student.

If the right-hand panel is not open, select the last icon on the bottom right of the player to open the panel.

Take notes

Open the first tab on the right-hand panel. Type you note in the Add a note...input field. Select the Add Note button. You can enable options to Reference Class Content and Hide my name.

Please note that you name is always visible to lecturers and staff on the live stream. 

You can review your notes during the live stream in the My Notes section above the Notes input field.

Select the second tab at the top of the right-hand panel to review live stream discussions. You can add your own questions and reply to questions from the lecturer and other students. 

Review who's online

The third tab on the top of the right-hand panel provides an overview of who has joined the live stream.

Bookmark content

You can bookmark content to review later by selecting the bookmark icon  at the bottom of the player.

Confusion flags

  • By selecting the flag icon  at the bottom of the player, you can discreetly flag slides you don't understand. This flagging will only be visible to lecturers, not other students.
  • This allows lecturers to see the slides which are causing the most confusion or students and can be done during or after the recording. Your lecturer will let you know if they are reviewing these. 

In class polling

You may be asked to respond to embedded Poll questions within the PowerPoint shared in the live stream. 

  1. Ensure Slides is selected from the drop-down menu alongside Video 1 or Video 2.
    • You can use the forward and back arrows to navigate through the PowerPoint. 
    • Your lecturer may hide slides to prevent you from looking forward while the lecturer is going on. You will see a grey Hidden Screen if your lecturer has done this.
    • Your lecturer will ask you to move to a particular slide to input your answer to a question.

In person live stream player

The In Person live stream player prioritises participation and note taking and the player will be muted by default. 

Take notes

You can take notes by selecting opening the Actions menu at the bottom of the right hand panel. Select Add a note. Write your note and select the Add note button. You can review your notes during the live stream by selecting the first tab in the right-hand panel.

Participate in discussions

Discussions display underneath the player. You can start a discussion by opening Actions menu at the bottom of the right- hand panel. Select Post discussion and type in the Add a comment box. Selecting the Add post button to post your discussion.

Review who's online
