About Conditional Access

Activities and resources in Moodle can be restricted according to conditions set by your lecturer. This means that you might only be able to access a particular activity on a certain date, if you belong to a specific group or if you have completed a specific activity.

This feature enables lecturers to personalise content to students.

Conditional activities/resources can only be accessed when a set of conditions is met. For instance, to access the final assignment you may need to complete a Quiz or to participate in a Forum.

Conditional activities are greyed out when the conditions haven’t been met. Underneath the activity you will find what you need to do in order to access it. The following two examples show how conditional activities look and how to interpret the restrictions.

The forum with the message not available unless you belong to group 1

This example shows a forum which is greyed out. You can only access this forum if you belong to Group 1.

Access to the assignment is restricted

In this example, to access the Assignment, you'll need to:

  • Post a discussion to the Discussion Forum.

And

  • Complete and receive a high enough grade in either Quiz 2 or Quiz 2.

Pay attention when you find nested conditions (indented):

  • If the indented conditions are after Any of it means that you need to meet only one of the conditions to access the activity.
  • If the conditions are after All of, you must meet all the conditions in order to access the activity.
