About Lecture Capture activity in Moodle

Students access Lecture Capture live stream and recordings via their Moodle modules. Lecture Capture can be added to any module the same way as other resources and activities. The recording page will remain empty until recordings have been scheduled, captured, and processed by the system.

When can I add Lecture Capture link to Moodle?

You can add the Lecture Capture link to Moodle once your Module course and section are available in Echo360. These will start to become available from 5th August 2024 as Lectures are automatically scheduled to be recorded.

If your module does not have any "lecture" events, you will need to book Lecture Capture recordings. You will be able to create the link to Lecture Capture once your Lecture Capture booking is confirmed.

Add Lecture Capture to Moodle

This method provides one link to all Lecture Capture recordings for the module. You only need to complete this step once per module per term. NB: If your module is running across multiple terms, you must complete this step each term.

  1. Open the relevant Moodle module.
  2. Turn Edit mode on.
  3. In General/Introductory topic select Add a Resource or Activity
  4. Select Lecture Capture from the Recommended tab.
  5. Provide a meaningful Activity name that will display for the students.
  6. Select Save and display.

Lecture Capture activity name completed and save and display button highlighted

  7. Select the link Open in new window. The Echo360 module page will open in a new tab.
  8. For Term: Select the current academic year.
  9. For Course: Type your module code and select the module.
    • If you are creating a Lecture Capture link in a module where the code starts with GEN or MDL, don't include the GEN or MDL when typing the module code. For example, you would type SOC_Y2CR not GEN_SOC_Y2CR.
  10. For Section: Select the corresponding module period e.g.24/5 PRD1 - Autumn Term Lectures. You need to do this even if your module is only running once in the academic year.
  11. Ensure Section home is selected. This provides one link to all the Lecture Capture recordings/live streams for your module.
  12. Select CONNECT button on bottom right of the page to confirm. Please note: If you do not select this button, you will not have completed the set up of Lecture Capture in Moodle.

Your scheduled recordings and live streams and any completed recordings associated with the module will display.

  • Recordings available to view: Video menu displays as black and white.
  • Scheduled recordings: Video menu displays as filled in black/dark gray. Highlighting or hovering your mouse over the icon provides a popup that states "Scheduled capture is not yet available"

Your Moodle module will remain open in another tab. Return to that tab to return to the module. Use Module in the breadcrumb trail below the module name to return to the module homepage.

On Grid format, select the link to Section in the breadcrumb trail and select the link to Module from the contextual navigation menu to return to the module home page.

Add Lecture Capture recordings to relevant module sections

  3. Open the section of the module where you want the Lecture Capture recording to display.
  4. Select Add a Resource or Activity.

Repeat the steps above for each recording that you want to display within a topic or week on your Moodle module.

Note on adding Lecture Capture live streaming to module sections

You can follow the guidance above to add Lecture Capture live streams to relevant module sections. In the days prior to the live stream, a message will display to students that no content has been added to this class yet when they select the link to the Lecture Capture classroom.

Looks like no content has been added to this class yet message

Within an hour of the live stream, a countdown timer to the start of the live stream will display. Once the live stream is live, a message will display to students to remind them to select the Show live stream link at the bottom left of the screen to view the lecture.

If you associate a PowerPoint with the Lecture Capture live stream, then the PowerPoint will display to students when they select the link to the Lecture Capture classroom anytime prior to the start of the live stream.

Make recordings unavailable to students

Once students have accessed your Lecture Capture resource, hiding the Lecture Capture link in Moodle will not revoke access. Recordings must be made unavailable via Echo360, to fully remove access for students.

If you have already connected your Lecture Capture recordings to the relevant Moodle module you can quickly access the recordings from Moodle.

  1. Open the relevant module.
  2. Select the link to Lecture Capture in the Module dashboard. This will open up a list of links of all Lecture Capture activities that you have added to your module. (For new modules using Grid format, open the Block drawer, navigate to the Module dashboard block, and select the link to Lecture Capture under Activities. For 2023-24 modules using Grid format, open the Block drawer, navigate to the Activities block, select the link to External tools and select the link to Lecture Capture.)
  3. Link to Lecture Capture displaying second in list of Activities panel on Module dashboard

  4. Select the link to the relevant Lecture Capture from the list of Lecture Capture links available on your module.
  5. Open the video menu to the right of the relevant recording and select Make unavailable. If you have a series of lecture recordings, these will all have the same title. Use the date alongside the recording to identify the relevant recording to make unavailable.

Download settings

You can set your recordings to be available for students to download. This enables students to access the recordings more flexibly when they are studying in locations with limited internet. By default, recordings are not downloadable. If you do not want to enable your recordings to be downloadable, remind your students that they can use the Echo360 app after they have accessed the Lecture Capture link for each of their Moodle modules via a browser. The app enables students to save recordings for offline viewing.

  1. Open the relevant module
