Create content - Lesson guide

A Lesson activity can be used to build structured pathways through content. You can test students' knowledge as they progress and provide alternative content based on their responses.

Add Lesson

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open the section where you want the Lesson to display.
  3. Select Add an activity or resource.
  4. From the Activities tab, choose Lesson and you will then be taken to the Lesson settings page.

General settings

  1. Input a Name for the Lesson. This will form the link which appears to students on the module page so it is helpful to give it a name that suggests its purpose.
  2. You can provide a summary of what the Lesson is about in the Description field and select the Display description on module page box for it to appear on the main module page.

Appearance settings

  • Progress bar: Choose this to show a bar at the bottom of the page showing how far into the lesson the student has got.
  • Display menu: Choose this if you want to show a list of the pages in the Lesson so a student can see what is coming up.

Availability settings

  • Available from / Deadline: Here you can set a start and end date and time for your Lesson.
  • Time limit: This allows you to set a time limit on the lesson. Students will see a countdown counter as they work. The timer does not stop them from doing the lesson when the time is up, but the correct answers are no longer scored.
    • Password protected lesson: Change to Yes and enter the password if you want students only to access it when they know the password.
    • Allow lesson to be attempted offline using the mobile app This setting is currently unavailable. Leave as No.

Flow Control Options

  • Allow Student review: This puts a Review Lesson button on the last screen of the lesson to encourage the student to navigate through the lesson again from the start. Be sure to select other settings to allow them to change their answers.
  • Provide option to try a question again: This displays a button after an incorrectly answered question so that the student can try again (but not get credit for it). Leave this off if you are using essay questions.
  • Maximum number of attempts: Decide here how many times you want students to be able to attempt each question. When they reach the maximum, they will be taken automatically to the next page.
    • Note: the following two options will only be shown once the "show more" option is selected.
  • Show More...
    • Action after correct answer: After answering a question correctly, there are 3 options for the following page:
      • Normal: Follow lesson path
      • Show an unseen page: Pages are shown in random order with no page shown twice
      • Show an unanswered page: Pages are shown in a random order, with pages containing unanswered questions shown again
    • Number of pages to show: You only need this if you have set Action after a correct answer to show an unseen or unanswered page. Otherwise, all pages will be seen.

Grade settings

  • Grade: Select the type of grading for this activity. If Scale is chosen, select the type of scale from the drop-down menu. If Point is chosen, enter the maximum available.
  • Grade category: Choose a grade category if you are using multiple categories in the grade area.
  • Grade to pass: This setting determines the minimum grade required to pass.
  • Practice lesson: Use this if you don't need the lesson to be scored/graded but just need students to work through some pages. Set this to Yes to have the same ungraded type Lesson in earlier versions of Moodle.
    • Note: the following options will only be shown once the "show more" option is selected.
  • Custom scoring: If enabled, each answer may be given a numerical point value (positive or negative.) Students are penalised for selecting the wrong answer which discourages random guesses in multiple choice questions.
  • Minimum number of questions Specifies the minimum number of questions that will be used to calculate a grade for this activity.
  • Re-takes allowed: Choose this if you want your students to be able to do the lesson more than once.

Restrict access and Activity completion settings

You can use the Restrict access settings to control the availability of content and activities based on one or more conditions, including date and group.

Activity completion allows you to set completion criteria for a specific activity or resource.

Activities or resources with a completion criteria display a circle next to them in the Module index. The circle turns green (and is filled in) when the student meet the criteria. On the main module page, a tick and the word "done" appears against the item when the student meets the criteria. This helps students manage their progress on a module and staff can easily review student engagement and progress against key activities.

You can combine Restrict access and Activity completion to provide structured pathways through your module.

Apply the settings

  1. Open the activity or resource.
  2. Select Settings from the contextual navigation menu above the module name. This opens the activity settings.
  3. Change the settings required.
  4. Select Save and return to module to save any changes made.
