Manage your content guide

Overview of how to manage your module content; including how to create a guided path through your content.

About manage your content

Moodle has lots of features to help you manage your content.

  • You can hide and delete individual content.
  • You can release content to students based on their group membership or on a certain date using Restrict access.
  • You can release new content when students complete an activity using Activity completion.
  • You can combine Restrict access and Activity completion to require that students to follow a particular pathway through the content or create alternative pathways through a module.
  • You can use bulk actions to delete, hide or move multiple pieces of content.

This guide provides detailed instructions on how to use these features. A quick overview of where to find these settings is outlined below.

Hide or delete content

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open the section where the resource/activity is located.
  3. Select the three dots alongside the relevant resource or activity to review the options available.
  4. Select either Hide or Delete.

Move content

You can add new content in any location within a section. You can move the content to a new location if required.

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open the section where the content is located.
  3. Open the section to where you want to move the content. 
  4. Ensure all other sections of the module are closed.
  5. Using the left button on your mouse, click and hold the white space surrounding the file name. The cursor will change into a four-arrowed shape
  6. Drag your content to the section you want it to display, then release the mouse button.
    • If you are working on a long module, keep the left mouse button pressed and select the up or down arrow on your keyboard to navigate to the new location for the content. Release the mouse button when the content has reached the correct location.

You can also move content using the Module index.Content moving from position 1 to position 2 under Week 2 of the module

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open module index on the left of the screen.
  3. Hover your mouse to the left of the title within the Module index that you want to move.
  4. Using the right button on your mouse, click and hold the content on module index, then drag and release it to the section you wish to move it to.

 

Finally you can move content using the content settings menu.

  1. Open the three dot menu to the right of the content.
  2. Select Move.
  3. An overlay window will open displaying all sections on the module. Open the section where you want to move the content.
  4. Select the location below which want to move the content.

 

 

Activity completion and restrict access

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open the relevant section.

Restrict access setting

  1. Where a restrict access setting has been applied, the condition displays on the module page. Select Edit restriction to update the restriction condition.

  2. Update the conditions and select Save and return to module.

Activity completion

  1. Where an activity completion setting has been applied, open the To do drop-down menu to review the condition applied. Select Edit conditions.

  2. Update the conditions and select Save and return to module.

Bulk actions

To quickly update your module for the new academic year, you can use the Bulk actions tool to delete, hide, make visible or duplicate content.

  1. Turn Edit mode on.Bulk actions link highlighted at top of module
  2. Select the Bulk actions link to the right of the module name at the top of the module.

 

 

  1. Your sections and content will display with checkboxes.
  2. Select the checkboxes next to the activities or sections where you want to perform the same actions.  
  3. Select the action that you want to complete on the content from the Bulk actions menu at the end of the module page.

Please note that if you duplicate a Label or a Bootstrap label, it is appended with the word copy, remember to remove the word copy and update the title of the label.

Perform bulk action on all sections or content

If you want to perform an action on all sections or on all module content, select a section or a piece of content and then choose the Select all checkbox in the menu at the end of the module. All of the sections or content will be selected and you can then choose the action to complete.

Duplicate sections

You can also duplicate sections on a module, but this feature is not available from the Bulk actions menu.

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. To duplicate a section, select the three dot menu to the right of the section. A menu will open.
  3. Select Duplicate. The section will be duplicated.

Activities and resources within a duplicated section are not appended with the word Copy. If you duplicate a section, immediately change the title of the copied activities or resources before you get confused!
