About activity completion

Activity completion enables staff and students to track progress. Academic and course office staff can set completion criteria for a specific activity or resource to help students monitor their progress through a module.

The criterion might require a student to:

  • view a resource,
  • receive a certain score or
  • indicate self completion.

Activities can be set to be marked as  'completed' automatically e.g. when a quiz is submitted, or manually marked as completed by the student.

In Moodle 4, completion conditions and activity due dates are visible to students from the module page and within the activity. Students also have a quick overview of complete and incomplete activities from the Module index on the left of the screen. This will help students keep on track of key activities and resources and more effectively manage their progress on a module.

When Activity completion is enabled for individual activities and resources students will see a notification display to the right of the content on the module page.

Manual activity completion

Activities that require students to manually indicate that they have completed the activity will display a Mark as done box. Students can check the activity as done directly from the module page or from within the activity where manual activity completion is set.

Automated activity completion

Activities that require students to meet certain conditions in order to complete the activity will display the text of the conditions that a student must meet. In the screenshot below, students have to make 1 entry for the glossary activity to be marked as complete.

Activities that have been set up with Activity completion conditions also display for students in the Module index in a panel on the left of the module. This provides students with a quicktop tips for learning on Moodle marked as done. Moodle terminology glossary and Moodle FAQ not completed overview of their progress on a module. Activities that have been completed are represented with a filled green circle and activities that have not been completed are represented by an unfilled circle. If students hover their mouse over the icon, green circles display the text Done and unfilled circles display the text To do.

Within the Module index there is no differentiation between manual and automated activity completion settings. However, students can quickly select the activity from the Module index to review the Activity completion settings.

Activate activity completion on your module

Activity completion is enabled by default on all modules for 2024/25. As a staff member enrolled on a module, you can choose which activities you set activity completion for and when you want to use manual and automated activity completion.

If you do do not see Activity completion within the settings of an activity or resource, follow these steps to enable completion tracking on your module:

  1. From the contextual navigation menu, select Settings to open the module settings.
  2. Scroll down to the Completion tracking settings.
  3. To turn completion tracking on, select Yes from the Enable completion tracking drop-down menu.
  4. To display activity completion settings on the module page, select Yes from the Show activity completion conditions drop-down menu.

Settings menu opened and completion tracking settings highlighted

  5. Select save and display.

Now you can set Activity completion criteria on individual activities and resources.
