Screencast: Set up and manage Workshop activity

Workshop is a powerful activity but is complex to set up. Start by reviewing the screencast for an overview of what is required and to understand the staff and student roles in this activity. You can then jump to various settings below to help you set up your Workshop activity.

Add a Workshop

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open the section where you want the Workshop to display, select Add an activity or resource.
  3. Select Workshop from the Activities tab. 

General Settings

In the Workshop name text box, enter a meaningful name for your activity.

Write a brief Description. Check the box at the bottom of this section to display the description on the module page. Otherwise it will be display when the Workshop link is selected.

Grading Settings

Decide the Grading settings and what percentage of the final grade would come from submission and assessment.

Default Workshop grading settings

  • Grading Strategy: What you choose here determines the assessment form students will use and also the strategy for grading submissions.
    • Accumulative grading: Comments and a grade are given regarding the aspects of the workshop specified.
    • Comments: Comments are given but no grade can be given to the specified aspects
    • Number of Errors: A yes/no assessment is used and comments are given for specified assertions
    • Rubric: A level assessment is given regarding specified criteria
    • Note: Grading strategies cannot be changed once we have entered the submission phase of a workshop
  • Grade for Submission: This sets the maximum grade a student can attain from a teacher for a given submission. It is scaled between 0-100. The default setting is 80.
  • Submission grade to pass: This settings determines the minimum submission grade required to pass.
  • Grade for Assessment: Sets the maximum grade a student can receive for assessing other students’ work. It is also scaled between 0-100. The default setting is 20.
  • Assessment grade to pass: This setting determines the minimum assessment grade required to pass.
  • Decimal places in grade: Decide here how many decimal places are allowed in the grade. The default setting is 0.

Submission settings

  • Instructions for submission: Explain here what the students must submit.
  • Submission types: Both Online text and File attachment are selected by default.  If either of these options are Required, check the Required box.
  • Maximum number of submission attachments: If you wish students to attach files, select how many here, up to a maximum of 7. If you leave it at 0 then they can only enter text.
  • Submission attachment allowed file types: Select Choose for a list of submission attachment file types allowed.
  • Maximum File Size: Decide here how large a file students can upload. The size will depend on the course upload limit.
  • Late Submissions: Checking this box will allow students to submit after the deadline.

Assessment settings

  • If you wish to include instructions for your students, these can be added in the free-text box within Assessment settings.
  • To enable self-assessment, check the box Students may assess their own work. If enabled, students may be allocated their own submission to assess.

Feedback

  • Overall feedback mode is set to Enabled and Optional by default. If enabled, a text field will be displayed at the bottom of the assessment form where reviewers can add additional information. This field can also be set to Disabled or Enabled and required.
  • Maximum number of overall feedback attachments is set to 0 by default. This can be set from 0 - 7.
  • Any text added to the Conclusion text box will be displayed to students at the end of the activity.

Example submissions

Check the Use examples box if example submissions will be provided and change the Mode of examples assessment as required. It is useful to provide examples if students are new to peer assessment.

Availability

Select Enable to activate the required submissions and assessment settings fields and enter the dates as required. 

If switch to the next phase after the submissions deadline box is ticked and a submissions deadline has been set, the assessment phase will automatically begin after the submissions deadline has passed.

Turnitin Plagiarism Plugin Settings

By default Turnitin is not enabled for Workshop activities. To enable the similarity report check, set Enable Turnitin to Yes.

Set the remaining fields as required.

Additional settings

In the Common module settings, you can set the availability of the workshop activity to be:

  • Visible to students.
  • Hidden from students.
  • Available to students but not shown on the module page.

You do not need to change the group mode.

Once you are happy with your settings, scroll down and select Save and display.

The Workshop Setup screen will be displayed. This reminds you of tasks you still need to complete and allows you to switch to different setup phases.
