Introduction to Moodle student guide

Moodle is one of Online Learning Environments available at City St George's. It is used by staff and students at the Clerkenwell and Moorgate campuses. Moodle modules provide access to online content, activities and communication tools. You will also use Moodle to submit assignments, as well as review feedback and provisional grades online. Your lecturers will tell you how Moodle will be used on your programme.

Moodle 4

Moodle 4 was launched in July 2023. All modules from the 2023/24 academic year onwards can be accessed via moodle4.city.ac.uk.

Moodle has been designed responsively so you can access Moodle - moodle4.city.ac.uk -  on your phone or tablet as well as a desktop. 

• Open an up-to-date web browser and type moodle4.city.ac.uk.
• Select City Single Sign-on button.
• If you’ve not already signed in to another service using Single Sign-on (e.g. the IT Service Desk or Office.com), the system will ask you to provide your @city.ac.uk credentials.
• The system will then send a 6-digit verification code to either your mobile device by SMS or via the authenticator app. Complete your authentication by entering this code into your browser.
• If you are accessing Moodle from an on-campus computer or are using VPN at home you will not need to complete this additional authentication step.
• On first login, you will be required to review and check to confirm agreement with Privacy and Cookie policies.

Please remember that you are not fully logged out of SSO services until you shut down your browser completely. The Moodle logout link will take you to a page with a reminder of this. 

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) issues

If you urgently require support with MFA related issues - e.g. you are without your mobile device - then please contact the IT Service Desk on 020 7040 8181.

Accessing Moodle on campus or via VPN

If you are accessing Moodle using an on campus PC or have logged into the VPN at home you will not be required to complete MFA.

• Follow the guidance on how to reset your password
• If you are still experiencing problems, log a query on the IT Self Service Portal or phone 020 7040 8181.
• If you are on campus drop in to one of the IT Service Points.

The Learning with Moodle module (accessed via Moodle) is available to all students.

• The module includes: how-to screencasts, one-minute video tips and FAQs.
• It also provides you with an opportunity to try out different Moodle activities to demonstrate the steps involved in submitting an assignment online or participating in a Forum.

Moodle has been designed to be accessible and work effectively on a wide range of devices.

• My Computer My Way: website with lots of ways to make devices easier to use
• MyStudyBar: an all-in-one collection of assistive technology apps for Windows, can be run from a USB stick for PCs where administrator access is required to install software

Your activity in Moodle generates reports which can be used by your lecturers to monitor your participation in activities and your engagement with resources.

From 3rd March 2025, the email address for all staff and students changed to name@citystgeorges.ac.uk.

Emails sent externally will now appear to the recipient to come from your name@citystgeorges.ac.uk email address

However, your Legacy City email address (name@city.ac.uk) will remain active for receiving emails and to log into all systems.

You will continue to use your Legacy City email address (name@city.ac.uk) or associated City user ID (e.g. sbtr459) to log in to all University systems including:

• Kaltura Mediaspace
• Zoom
• Microsoft systems (e.g., Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint)
• Poll Everywhere
