City Course format features

City Course Format has been developed to improve navigation and consistency of modules. The City Course Format was developed based on recommendations from student user evaluations. The City Course Format is applied by default to all taught modules. This page outlines the features of the City Course Format for students.

  • Module Dashboard at the top of the module to ensure quick access to key module information, resources and activities.
  • Modules are laid out in two columns with right-aligned blocks to prioritise the main content area in modules. If you are accessing Moodle on a mobile, your blocks will default to the bottom of the module page.
  • Modules are structured into collapsed topics or weeks to provide a concise overview of the module structure and content.
  • Modules have a top navigation bar featuring My Favourites and Help & Support menu

Module Dashboard

  • The Module Dashboard is at the top of the module to ensure quick access to key module information, resources and activities.
  • Staff contact details are built into the Dashboard.
  • Lecture capture when used in modules will be easily accessible from the Activities links in the Module Dashboard.
  • The first seven activities are displayed. When there are more activities in a module these are accessible under View More.
  • Selecting the link to Lecturers from Quick Links will indicate the Lecturers and Module Leaders for the module and include their contact information if provided.
  • Selecting the link to Students will provide a list of students enrolled on your module.
  • Selecting the link to Course Officers will provide a list of Course Officers and their contact information if provided.

Module blocks

  • Modules are laid out in two columns with right-aligned blocks to prioritise the main content area in modules. Blocks provide additional functionality on your module.
  • Select Hide Sidebar to hide the blocks on the right or Show Sidebar to show the blocks.Show sidebar
  • If you are accessing Moodle on a mobile, your blocks will default to the bottom of the module page.
  • School specific blocks (where available) will display information that is relevant to your programme of study and the School you are studying in. These are displayed on the right-hand side of your module or at the bottom of your module if you are accessing on a mobile device.
  • Module events and module updates blocks on the right hand column provide contextual information on the modules, such as all Calendar events and updated content/activities in a module. 

Module Topics/Weeks

  • Modules are structured into collapsed topics or weeks. This provides a concise overview of the module structure and content.
  • Select the buttons to Open all or Close all topics on your module.
  • Select the name of a topic/week to open it and review the content. Select Close section at the bottom of a topic to close a section as you complete it.

Top navigation bar

  • Need to access a module regularly? Add it to your My Favourites for quick access from the My Favourites menu on the top navigation bar.
  • Help & Support menu in top navigation bar for both staff and students, offering quick access to educational technologies support, IT Self Service Portal and accessibility information.
