Monitor progress guide

Explore the activities and features available in Moodle to help you monitor student progress.

Option 1: via the Checklist activity

  1. Open the Checklist activity.
  2. Select View Progress on the contextual navigation menu to display a table of students' progress on the activity.
  3. Select the Show progress bars button to display what percentage of the list each student has completed so far.
  4. To see a detailed breakdown of the percentage completion of a student, select the magnifying glass icon located into the right of or below a particular student's name.
  5. To see the completion date and time of the completed checklist items, select the Toggle names & dates button. The Name of the person and the Date they have completed the task will show.

Option 2: via the Checklist block

You must first add the Checklist block.

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open the Block drawer on the right of the page.
  3. Select Add a block. An overlay window opens displaying all available blocks.
  4. Choose Checklist . A Checklist block will display at the end of the Block drawer
  5. Select the Settings cog icon at the top right corner of the new block.
  6. Select Configure Checklist block:
    • Checklist overview: Select Yes to create quick links to all the checklists in the module. Select No to display student progress bars for a particular checklist.
  7. Choose checklist: If you have more than one Checklist in the module, select the relevant Checklist. To display another Checklist, add another Checklist block.
  8. Default group: Determine which group of users to display (if one or more groups are set up in the module).
  9. Select Save changes. The block will display at the bottom of the right-hand column of the module.
  10. The block will display student progress on the Checklist activity. Select a student name from the block to access the View progress tab.

Option 3: Export items

  1. On the module page, select Grades from the contextual navigation menu.Grader report menu opened
  2. Open the Grader report drop-down menu from the top left of the page.
  3. Select Export from the bottom of the menu.
  4. Ensure that Export as menu displays Checklist.
    • Checklist to export: From the drop-down, select the checklist which you want to export
    • Group: Select the group of students (if one or more groupings are set up in the module) to be included in the export spreadsheet
    • Include optional items: Option to include optional checklist items in the spreadsheet
    • Percentage column: Show (required items) percentage complete for each student
    • Percentage row: Show percentage of students who have ticked each item
    • Percentage for headings: Show percentage of required items checked under each heading
  5. Select Export Excel file.

Note: In the export spreadsheet, completed checklist items are marked with 1 if they are updated by students, and Y if by lecturers. So Y1 means that the item is marked as complete by both the student and lecturer:
