Issues while submitting assignments

If you encounter any issues while submitting your assignments, please contact your course offiice as soon as possible.

See the information below for how to solve common issues.

M14:11 Error

The M14:11 Error appears when assignments are not correctly processed by Turnitin.

Prior to assignment deadline: If you select review your assignment on Turnitin and are unable to open it and get an M14:11 error, resubmit the assignment again prior to the deadline. If you submitted your assignment as a Word doc, save it as a PDF to resubmit.

After assignment deadline or no option to resubmit: Contact your Course Officer to inform them of the error message and to get advice on how to resubmit. Log a call on IT Self Service Portal and the Digital Education team can investigate the issue.

If the page hangs with the message Loading data from Turnitin, try refreshing your browser. If this does not work, try using Firefox while Information Services investigate this issue. If you are a Mac user, please ensure that you using OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) or above.

Turnitin for iPad app

It is not possible to use to use the Turnitin for iPad app to submit your assignments as students must access Turnitin through Moodle.

Highlighted text on a word document

There is a known issue where any highlights added to text in Word for Windows will disappear when submitted. This is due to a bug in Word for Windows. Word for Mac is not affected by this bug.

If you need to submit a word document with highlighted text, you will need to convert your file to a PDF before attempting to upload it to Turnitin. This ensures it is in a format Turnitin can process without any problems.

The file cannot be submitted as there is no accessible content in the file pool to submit.

If you receive the error, The file cannot be submitted as there is no accessible content in the file pool to submit, remove any capital letters in your file name and try to resubmit the document. If this does not resolve the issue, please raise an ticket on IT Self Service Portal with details of the module and assignment name and we will investigate for you. Provide as much detail as you can to help us investigate the issue, e.g.

  • What program you used to create your file – Word, PowerPoint etc?
  • What kind of system you use – a laptop, a PC, a tablet or phone? And do you use Windows or Mac?
  • Which browser you use to access Moodle?

XML cannot be parsed

If you receive the error, XML cannot be parsed when submitting a Moodle assignment with Turnitin enabled, check that the file name is under 40 characters. If the issue is not a long filename, rename the file and try to resubmit it. If this does not resolve the issue, raise a ticket on IT Self Service Portal providing details of the module and assessment. Provide as much detail as you can to help us investigate the issue, e.g.
