Explore the different options for grading Moodle assignments.

About Marking workflow

Enabling Marking Workflow in a Moodle Assignment is an optional workflow that requires grades to go through a series of stages before they're released to students. This allows for multiple rounds of marking.

You must start the workflow by first hiding the assignment grade item from students.

Hide grades and feedback for an assignment

Grader Report menu opened and Gradebook setup highlightedYou must hide the individual assignment grade item while you are marking to ensure that marks and feedback are released at the same time to all students. To do this:

  1. Select Grades in the contextual navigation menu above the module name. The Grader report page opens
  2. Open the drop-down menu on the left of the page and choose Gradebook setup.
  1. Select the Edit link on the same row as the name of the grade item you are marking.
  2. Select Hide.

Enable Marking workflow

  1. Open the Assignment.
  2. Select Settings from the contextual navigation menu above the module name. This opens the Assignment settings.
  3. Scroll to the Grades settings set Use marking workflow to Yes.     
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the assignment and Save and display.

Set marking workflow state

  1. Select the relevant assignment.
  2. Select View all submissions.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and under Options select All to display all assignments on the page.
  4. Select all the students or a selection of students that you want to set a marking state for.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page. Select the downward arrow alongside With selected...and select Set marking workflow state.

  1. Select Go.
  2. If a pop up window appears, select OK. 
  3. Set the appropriate marking workflow state which at this stage is likely to be In marking.
    • Not marked: Marking has not yet started.
    • In marking: Marking has started but not yet finished.
    • Marking completed: Marking completed and is subject to final review.
    • In review: Marking is now being quality checked.
    • Ready for release: Marking is ready for release but is not yet visible to students. 
    • Released: Marking is released to students and students can access the grades/feedback.

Change workflow state

As you mark student assignments, you can change the workflow state.                                                                                

  1. Select the grade button alongside the student you are marking.
  2. Underneath the grade, change the Marking workflow state using the drop-down menu.

Release feedback

  1. Open the assignment.
  2. Select View all submissions.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and under Options set Assignments per page to All to get all assignments to display on one page.

  4. Select all students by checking the Select box at the top of the page.

  2. Select Set marking workflow state.
  3. Select Go.
  4. Select Released (the student can access the grades/feedback once the grade item is hidden. For anonymous marking, you will also need to select reveal student identities for feedback to be released).
  5. Return to the module page and select Grades from the contextual navigation menu.
  6. Select the Grader Report drop-down menu and select Gradebook setup.
  7. Select the Edit link adjacent to the grade item.
  8. Select Show.
  9. No email will be generated to the students when you select Released in the marking workflow. You must send a message to students advising them that their feedback and grades are available via Quickmail Block or News Forum.

 

 

External Examiners & Marking workflow

If Marking workflow is set to yes from within a Moodle assignment settings, and the marks have been released, the External Examiner cannot view the submissions unless marking allocation has been used.
