Explore the different options for grading Moodle assignments.

About online feedback and grading options

The online feedback and grading mechanisms require you to have consistent internet access. A summary of each option is provided below.

Online feedback options

  • Grades and feedback can be entered directly on the Grading page for each student before saving and moving on to the next student.
  • Feedback files can also be added from the same screen.
  • A Marking record allows marking criteria to be set up in a table with a comment explaining what is expected from the student, and a maximum mark that can be awarded.
  • Personalised feedback and grades are added against each criterion and 'frequently added comments' can also be used.
  • A Marking record can support consistency in marking between different lecturers and make the marking process more transparent to students.
  • Students can view the Marking record before they submit their assignment.
  • A Rubric allows marking criteria to be set up in a table with descriptors.
  • A Rubric consists of a set of criteria plotted against levels of achievement. A numeric grade is assigned to each level. For each criterion, the lecturer chooses the level they judge the work to have reached.
  • A Rubric can support consistency in marking between different lecturers and make the marking process more transparent to students.
  • Students can view the Rubric before they submit their assignment, so that they know what their learning priorities are in relation to the assignment.

  • Quick grading is used to enter grades and feedback comments directly onto the Assignment Grading screen.
  • This is useful for providing short feedback paragraphs and grades in a single screen.
  • Quick grading is not recommended when there are multiple markers.
