Add the Poll Everywhere Teams app

Poll Everywhere Teams app

The Poll Everywhere app can be added to Teams meetings to allow attendees to respond to polls without having to open a separate browser window. There are some restrictions to the types of meeting the app can be added to.

  • You cannot add the Poll Everywhere app to meetings that have a channel associated with them.
  • You can add the app to meetings created in the Teams or Outlook calendar with individuals or groups of individuals invited, or via the Meet Now option in chats.
  • The app can be added by anyone who has organiser, co-organiser or presenter permission in the meeting.
  • The Poll Everywhere app works best within the Teams app rather than in a browser.

Add the app to a meeting

  1. Open your calendar within Teams and select the meeting.
  2. Select Edit
  3. Select the + icon at the top of the screen
  4. Search for Poll Everywhere, or select Poll Everywhere if it is already available.
  5. Sign into Poll Everywhere using your e-mail and Poll Everywhere password. NB: this may be different from your usual IT password.
  6. Poll Everywhere will open a browser window. In the browser window, select Authorize and close the window.
  7. In Teams, select Save.
  8. When you start the meeting, the Poll Everywhere icon will be available on menu bar.

Present polls in Microsoft Teams

You can present your polls and participants can respond within Microsoft Teams meetings via the Poll Everywhere app. The app works best within the Teams app rather than Teams in a browser.

Activate the Poll Everywhere app in a meeting

  1. Select Poll Everywhere from the menu at the top of the screen.
  2. If you haven't added the app in advance, log into your Poll Everywhere account to authorise the app.
  3. If you are running your poll from the website, activate the polls. Put your polls into Present mode and share your browser window.
  4. If you have embedded your poll in PowerPoint, share the presentation. Go into slideshow mode to trigger the polls to activate as usual.
  5. If you only have one screen, use PowerPoint and select Set Up Slideshow > Browsed by an individual (window). Share the PowerPoint window rather than the file. Resize the presentation window from fullscreen to part of the screen to be able to view the Teams meeting and presentation

Add another presenter

More than one person can present polls during a Teams meeting. Each presenter must log into Poll Everywhere via the Apps menu and authorise Poll Everywhere in the meeting.

If you don't want to use Poll Everywhere, you can create polls in the Teams meeting chat using the Teams Polls function.

Present polls in Zoom

You can present your polls in a Zoom meeting via screensharing.

Please note: Students cannot respond to the polls from within the Zoom meeting itself. They will only be able to respond by opening the poll in a separate browser window or by opening the Poll Everywhere app.

  • If you are running your poll from the website, share your screen to show your browser and share the link to the Pollev.com site.
  • If students have a second device, they can scan the QR code on the slides to open PollEv.com
  • If you have embedded your poll in PowerPoint, share your screen to show the presentation. Going into slideshow mode when presenting in  Zoom will trigger the polls to activate as usual.

If you don't want to use PollEverywhere, you can create and present simple multiple choice polls using the built-in Zoom polls function.

Advice for students

When you use Poll Everywhere with your students for the first time, please bear the following in mind:

  • Make sure students know how to respond:
    • Students can respond via a browser at PollEv.com/YOURURL,
    • Students can scan the QR code on the slides to be directed to PollEv.com
    • Students can download the free Poll Everywhere app to their mobile devices
    • In Teams, students can respond by selecting the Poll Everywhere button to open a response panel.
    • In Zoom, make it clear that students have to respond via a browser or app outside the Zoom meeting.
  • Use an icebreaker to familiarise students with the system.
  • Give students enough time to respond to each activity, but not so long that they get bored - 30 seconds is usually good.
  • Establish ground rules about the use of offensive language and emojis.
  • Clarify whether students have to register or if their responses will remain anonymous.
