Gradebook guide

Explore the Gradebook where Moodle stores and organises students' grades.

About manual grading

For manually created grade items (those that are not associated with a Moodle activity), you can enter grades by typing them directly into the Grader report page. For grade items associated with Moodle quizzes or activities, you can still enter grades using the method. However, when you do, you are actually performing a grade override. Doing so will prevent the quiz or activity from automatically making any further updates to the grade. This is typically done in cases where, for example, a student's grade has been uplifted after extenuating circumstances or appeal.

  1. Select Grades in the contextual navigation menu above the module name. The Grader report page opens.
  2. Turn Edit mode on. The Grader report becomes editable.
  3. Each student will have two entry boxes for each assessment. Enter the grade in the field on the left and feedback comment on the right. The grade item will change colour to indicate that the grade has overridden the grade provided via the activity grading page.

  4. To display a larger editor, select the edit feedback (cog icon) above the feedback entry box.
  5. To review the marks for a particular assessment activity, select the relevant assessment column heading.

Bulk insert

You can bulk insert all grades for an individual student or all grades in a grade item (assessment).

You can select whether to fill the grade for just empty grades or for all grades. This is a really useful tool if you want to input a mark of zero for anyone who has not attempted the assessment and therefore has an empty grade. To use the bulk insert function:

  1. Select the Single view icon (pencil icon) next to the student name or grade item.

  2. In the single view, open the actions drop-down menu, choose Bulk insert grades.

  3. On the pop-up screen, check "I understand that my unsaved changes will be lost".

  5. Enter the value in the "insert new grade" box.
