Gradebook guide

Explore the Gradebook where Moodle stores and organises students' grades.

About navigate Grader report

  1. Select Grades from the contextual navigation menu.
  2. The Grader report page displays. If it does not display, open the drop-down menu on the left of the page and select Grader report.

  1. The Grader report displays as a table.
  2. The first group of columns relate to the student. 
  3. Each assessed activity or manual grade item displays in a new column.
  4. The cells display the grade for each assessment for each student.
  5. The last column in the Grader report is the Module total. If the Grader report contains a lot of assessed activities, scroll to the right to see the Module total column.
  6. The Gradebook parent category (Module name) displays in a row above the assessed activities.
  7. Any Gradebook sub-categories will display in a row beneath the Parent category and above assessed items within the category.
    • A total column will display for each Gradebook sub-category.
  8.  You can toggle between three views of the grade categories by selecting the three dots icon menu to the right of the category name within the Grader report:
    • Show grades only: Grades only—all the grade columns, no category totals column
    • Show totals only: Aggregates only—no grade columns, only category totals column
    • Show grades and totals: Full view—all the grade columns and the category totals column

Scroll through Grader report

The Grader report allows for smooth and stable scrolling horizontally and vertically.

  1. If you have a lot of assessed activities and grade items in the Grader report, the student names will always display as you scroll across the page. You can scroll up and down, or left and right using the scroll bar.
  2. If you have a lot of students enrolled on the module, the assessed activities and manual grade items will always display as you scroll up and down the page.

Locate student in Grader report

  1. Open Grader report.
  2. The Search users textbox next to the Grader report dropdown allows you to search for students by their first name and/or last name.

Filter by name is highlighted and selected to display the first letter of first name and last time to filter participants.

  1. The Filter by name dropdown next to the Search users textbox field at the top of the Grader report page allows you filter your students by the first letter in their first name and/or last name.
  1. Select the three dots to the right of the students name and select User report to navigate to the Grades & feedback report for the student.

  2. Select the three dots to the right of the student name and select Single view for this user. From here you can view the grades of one single student across all assessments on the module.

  3. To edit the grade, switch Edit Mode on, then select the override checkbox next to the grade item. When finished, select Save. You are also able to change the student through the Search users textbox to the right of the Single view dropdown.

Access Grade history

The Grade history page allows lecturers to view the grading history for students and filter by the following criteria:

  • Specific students
  • Grade item
  • Grader
  • Date range
  • Revised grades only

You can download the data in various formats such as .csv or an Excel spreadsheet.

To access Grade history:

  1. Select Grades from the contextual navigation menu.
  2. Select Grade history from the drop-down menu on the left of the page.
