Category settings

Before you set up the Gradebook, have the module specification to hand. The assessment section will give you an idea of the number and type of assessments and the respective weighting of the assessments. It also provides a basic structure that would be appropriate for the Gradebook.

  1. Go to the category heading to which you want to edit and select Edit and choose Edit settings.
  2. If you are updating the Module total, then select the top category (by default, it is named after the module).

You can edit the following settings.

  • Category name: The name of the default category is the name of the module. Leave it blank for default or enter a new name.
  • Aggregation: The aggregation determines how grades in a category are combined. Please see Which aggregation method? below for information about different types of aggregation methods.
  • Grade Type: There are four grade types:
    1. None: No grading possible
    2. Value: A numerical value with a maximum and minimum
    3. Scale: An item in a list
    4. Text: Feedback only
    • Only value and scale grade types may be aggregated. The grade type for an activity-based grade item (such as assignment or quiz) is set on the activity settings page.
  • Scale: Applicable only when using the scale grade type. This can be for example, Pass/Fail.
  • Maximum/Minimum grade: This setting determines the maximum/minimum grade when using the value grade type. The maximum grade for an activity-based grade item (such as assignment or quiz) is set on the activity settings page.
  • Hidden: If ticked, grades are hidden from students. A hidden until date may be set if desired by selecting Show more.. to release grades after grading is completed.
  • Locked: If ticked, grades can no longer be automatically updated by the related activity.

Aggregation methods

The aggregation drop-down menu lets you choose the aggregation strategy that will be used to calculate each student's overall grade for a grade category.

The different options are:

  • Mean of grades: The sum of all grades divided by the total number of grades
  • Weighted mean of grades: similar to Mean of grades, except that instead of each of the grade items contributing equally to the final average, some items contribute more than others
  • Simple weighted mean of grades: similar to Weighted mean of grades, except that the maximum grade of each of the grade items represents the contribution to the final average
  • Mean of grades (with extra credits)
  • Median of grades: The grade that occurs in the middle when grades are arranged in order of size
  • Lowest grade
  • Highest grade
  • Mode of grades: The grade that occurs the most frequently
  • Sum of grades: The sum of all grade values and maximum grades (This aggregation method has become obsolete and replaced by 'Natural' starting from 30 June 2015)
  • Natural: The sum of all grade values scaled by weight

For detailed explanation of each of the above aggregation methods, review the guidance below from Moodle.

  • Summative grade items with equal weights: Weighted mean of grades/ Mean of grades
  • Summative grade items with different weights: Weighted mean of grades
  • Summative grade items marked out of their weight:
    • For example, Assignment A is marked out of 40 and Assignment B out of 60, making the course total 100.
      • Weighted mean of grades/ Sum of grades
  • Same assessment which has two submission links in the module: (for example, one for late submission)
    • Highest grade
  • Note: Review working examples on the Grading and calculations page
  • If your module has formative assessment, you need to Add category to aggregate the course total. Refer to Add grade items/categories page for guidance.
  • If your grade item is an offline assessment, or requires a breakdown of marks for smaller parts, you need to Add grade item to aggregate the category total. Refer to Add grade items/categories page for guidance.
  • If you want to use formula to calculate the course or category total. Refer to Grading and calculations page for guidance on Edit calculation.
  • If you want a specified number of the lowest grades to be excluded from the aggregation. Refer toexclude the lowest guidance.
