Create Turnitin Assignment guide

Turnitin is an online assessment management system that you can use to support student submission, provision of grades and feedback. It also includes a similarity check. This guide provides an overview of how to set up Turnitin assignments.

Requirements for a Qualitative Rubric in Excel

You can upload .xls or .xslx file to the Turnitin rubric/form manager in order to create a new rubric. Please see below requirements for successful upload:

  • The file must be a .xls or .xlsx file.
  • Only one rubric can be uploaded per Excel file.
  • The rubric in the spreadsheet must have the scales of the rubric as its first row.
  • The rubric in the spreadsheet must have the criteria of the rubric as its first column.
  • The rubric must have no more than 20 scales.
  • The rubric must have no more than 50 criteria.
  • If included, criteria descriptions should be in the same cells as the criteria titles separated by a line break.
  • Descriptors for the body of the rubric can be included.
  • Criteria titles must be 13 characters or less.

Grading formulas will not be imported with the Excel file. Numerical values cannot be imported.  If you would like to use numerical values, add them to the rubric after import using the rubric/form manager.

Turnitin Assignment Settings

  1. When creating and/or editing your Turnitin Assignment, select GradeMark Options in the assignment settings.
  2. Select Launch Rubric Manager.

  1. Select the Import/ Export icon the the top right hand corner.Import export rubric settings
  2. Select Import from the options.

Download the template and edit downloaded file

  1. Within Import/ Export window select Download ExampleTemplateImport Rubrics screenSave the file on your computer and start editing.
  2. You can edit descriptors and scales and add new ones. Remember that criteria titles must be shorter than 13 characters.
  3. Save your updated file in .xls or .xlsx

Upload the rubric to Turnitin

  1. Open the Turnitin Assignment.
  2. Select Settings from the contextual navigation menu above the module name. This opens the Turnitin Assignment settings.
  3. Scroll to GradeMark Options.
  4. Select Launch Rubric Manager.
  5. Select the Import icon at the top right of the window.
  6. Select File or drag and drop your created rubric file in .xlx or .xlsx format.
  7. Select View to check the rubric is correct. It will appear on the screen. You will not need to add in the criteria weightings and the scale scores.

  1. Name the rubric by typing in the Untitled field at the top left of the rubric.
  2. Select the % icon from the Rubric scoring tab at the bottom of the rubric to create a standard qualitative rubric.
  3. Enter your criteria weighting in each of the criteria cells. Ensure this adds up to 100%
  4. Enter your scale title and score in each of the Scale cells.
    • If you have a 0 score in the scale, input 0 in the relevant scale cell. If you do not enter this, your scales will not save and your rubric will not grade as expected.
  5. Select Save at the bottom right of the screen.

  6. Navigate out of the window.
  7. Select GradeMark Options.
  8. Select the newly created Rubric from the Attach a rubric to this assignment drop-down menu. Please note that newly created Rubrics default to the bottom of the Rubric list rather than displaying in alphabetical order.

 

Select an existing Rubric in GradeMark Options

  1. Open the Turnitin Assignment.
  2. Select Settings from the contextual navigation menu above the module name. This opens the Turnitin Assignment settings.
  3. Select GradeMark Options.
  4. Select the existing Rubric from the Attach a rubric to this assignment drop-down menu.
  5. Save and return to module to save your changes.
