Create Turnitin Assignment guide

Turnitin is an online assessment management system that you can use to support student submission, provision of grades and feedback. It also includes a similarity check. This guide provides an overview of how to set up Turnitin assignments.

Template 2: Quantitative Rubric

This Rubric template outlines the assessment criteria and provides a custom scoring guide for different steps in achieving each criterion. You can select which part of the scale a student’s work equates to for each criterion. Generic feedback is provided to the student depending on their performance in meeting each criterion. The overall mark is calculated by the feedback fields you select on the Rubric. This Rubric is suitable for use where each of your criterion has a different weighting and can be used for both Moodle and Turnitin assignments.

  17. Select Save and return to module.

You can reuse this Rubric on as many different assignments as it is relevant to as long as you don’t need to change any information in the form. If you do need to change information, then you can:

  • duplicate your Rubric and make changes or
  • import a new copy of the templated Rubric and make your changes.

Remember to modify the name of the Rubric so differences in forms is obvious when you are reviewing these in the Rubric Manager.

We have full guidance on marking using rubrics in our online guidance.

Template 3: Qualitative Rubric

This templated rubric outlines the assessment criteria and provides a scoring range for different steps in achieving the criteria. You can select the scoring range a student’s work equates to for each criterion and the associated feedback for this scoring range. The overall mark is not calculated by the feedback fields you select on the Rubric. You will need to manually input the student's overall grade. This rubric can be used with Turnitin assignments only where marking and feedback is completed using Feedback Studio.

Create Rubric from Template 3: Qualitative Rubric

We have developed this template into a qualitative rubric for marking Turnitin assignments in Feedback Studio. This means that you can use the rubric to provide consistent feedback against each criterion but the rubric will not calculate the score. The marker will have to input the final grade in Feedback Studio.

Follow the instructions below to reuse or to edit and reuse this qualitative rubric with Turnitin Feedback Studio.

Turnitin Feedback Studio Template

If the criterion and scales feedback only require some minor amendments you can download the Rubric we have developed and make minor amendments to this within your Rubric Manager after upload.

  1. Select the link to Template3__Qualitative_Rubric.rbc (City login required)
  2. Download the rbc file.
  3. Access the relevant module.
  4. Open the Turnitin Assignment.
  5. Select Settings from the contextual navigation menu above the module name. This opens the assignment settings.

  16. You can now select this rubric to use from the Attach a rubric to this assignment drop-down field. A new Rubric typically defaults to the bottom of the list.
  17. If the Rubric does not display, save your assignment and then return to edit it. This will refresh the Rubric Manager and your Rubric will appear in alphabetical position.
  18. Select Save and return to module.

You can reuse this Rubric on different assignments if it matches the assessment criteria and marking scheme.

If you need to change any of the information on the Rubric to match your assessment criteria, you can either:

  • duplicate your Rubric and make changes or
  • import a new copy of the templated Rubric and make your changes.

Remember to modify the name of the Rubric so differences between forms are obvious when you are reviewing these in the Rubric Manager.

We have full guidance on marking using rubrics in our online guidance.

Major changes required to Rubric templates

If you need to make major changes to the Turnitin Rubric it is recommended that you download the Excel template from Turnitin and create your Rubric in Excel and then import it into Rubric Manager. It can be challenging to create a complex Rubric within the Rubric Manager and users have reported getting timed out of the system and losing work on Rubrics.

  1. Open the Turnitin Assignment.
  2. Select Settings from the contextual navigation menu above the module name. This opens the assignment settings.
  3. Scroll down to GradeMark Options.
  4. Select Launch Rubric Manager.
  5. Select the Import/Export button on the top right of the Rubric Manager
  6. Select Import. An overlay will open.
  7. An Excel template will display on the left of the screen. Download this template. You can now build your Rubric in Excel.
    • Criterion can be no longer than 13 characters.
    • Scales are limited to 24 characters including spaces.
    • You can not add your scores to the Excel file and you will need to add these after you have imported your Excel template.

Rubric templates in Turnitin

Turnitin Quantitative Rubric

You select standardised feedback for each student based on the standard that they reach for each of the criterion. The grade is automatically calculated for the student assignment. This Rubric will help to standardise grading and feedback when working with a group of markers.

The disadvantage of this type of marking template is that you are limited within a range of marks.

Turnitin Qualitative Rubric

Standardised feedback is provided to each student based on the standard that they reach for each criterion. The marker has to calculate the final grade.

The disadvantage of this type of marking template is that students may find it challenging to understand why they receive a different mark to their peers when they receive the same feedback per criterion.
