Moodle Assignment feedback guide

Explore the different options for grading Moodle assignments.

Review extensions

  1. Select the link to the assignment.
  2. Select  the Submissions tab to open the Submissions page.
  3. From the menu at the top of the submissions table, open the Status menu and select Granted extension. Your submission table will now only display students that have been granted an extension.

  4. Alternatively,  you can download a grading worksheet (Open the Actions menu at the top of the submission table and select Download grading worksheet) and all extensions display in the status column. Please note, you cannot access the grading worksheet if you are using Moodle's Advanced grading mechanisms - Rubric or Marking guide.

Access student submission and provide feedback and grade

  1. From the Submissions page, select the three button menu in the Grade column next to the student you want to grade. Select Grade.
  2. The grading page for the student will open.
  3. A message will display stating that the grade and feedback is visible. As long as you have the following enabled, students cannot view their grade and feedback until Marking workflow is set to Released.

    • Allow partial release of grades
  4. A unique Participant ID is generated by Moodle to replace the student name.
  5. Review the student's coursework.
  6. Provide feedback in the Feedback comments input field or upload a feedback file.
  7. Provide a Grade in the Grade out of 100 field.
  8. Set Marking workflow state to agreed state -  i.e. Marking completed. Your programme team may be using marking workflow to manage marking through different stages, consult documentation provided.
  9. Select the Save changes button.

Provide grades and feedback for late submissions with an extension

  1. From the Submissions page, select the three button menu in the Grade column next to the student you want to grade. Select Grade.
  2. The grading page for the student will open. A unique Participant ID is generated by Moodle to replace the student name.
  3. Coursework that has been submitted after the deadline will display a notification that the Assignment was submitted late and include how late the submission was received.
  4. A message will display stating that the grade and feedback is visible. As long as you have the following enabled, students cannot view their grade and feedback until Marking workflow is set to Released.

  5. Review the student's coursework.
  6. Provide feedback in the Feedback comments or upload a feedback file. 
  7. Calculate the grade including the penalty deduction of 10 percentage points, to a minimum of the pass mark, if the work is of a pass standard. Input this grade in the Grade out of 100 field.
  8. In the Feedback comments field, note the grade that the coursework would have received if it were submitted on time and the grade following the penalty deduction.
  9.  Set Marking workflow state to agreed state -  i.e. Marking completed. Your programme team may be using marking workflow to manage marking through different stages, consult documentation provided.
  10. Select Save changes.

Release grades and feedback for extensions and deanonymise submissions

  1. Open the assignment from the module page. This opens the Grading summary page.
  2. Select the Submissions tab to view the Submissions page.
  3. If you cannot see all the submissions you expect, check to see whether a filter has been applied. Filters can follow you from one module to another, and if another user has added a filter, it may still be in place. Remove the filters to see all submissions.
  4. Once all grades and feedback has been finalised - open the Actions menu and select Reveal student identities.
  5. A confirmation dialog box displays, select Continue to confirm.

  1. Open the Advanced menu above the submissions table. Marking state set to Ready for release
  2. Set Marking state to the state agreed by the Programme team in advance of mark release e.g. Ready for release and select the Apply button.
  1. The submissions table will be filtered to only those students who meet the selected marking workflow state.
  2. Check the box at the top of the submissions table to select all submissions returned.
  3. From the floating footer, open the More menu.
  4. Select Change marking state.

  1. A confirmation dialog will display, select the Change marking state button.
  2. You will be directed to a new page set the Marking state to Released.
  3. Set Notify student to Yes and select the Save changes button. The Notify student option sends an email to the student alerting them to the release of grades and feedback.
    • If Notify student option is not enabled, no email is generated to the student, but they can still view grades and feedback by accessing the Assignment activity or the gradebook.

  4. You will be returned to the Submissions page and nothing will display as no submissions have a state of Ready for release.
  5. Open the Advanced menu above the submissions table and set Marking state to No filter and select the Apply button. The submission table will display.
