Find out how you can use Blocks to provide additional functionality and content to your module.

About Remote RSS feeds block

A Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed, is a quick way of integrating content from a a blog, or news feed. It is harder to find RSS feeds these days. Feeds from BBC are still easy to find and use. 

Copy RSS feed

  1. Search for an RSS feed you want to use. 
  2. You may get an option to select the category that you want a feed from.
  3. Copy the URL which has rss.xml at the end of the address.

Adding the Remote RSS Feeds Block to Your Module

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open the Block drawer on the right of the module.
  3. Select Add a block.
  4. An overlay window opens displaying available blocks.
  5. Select Remote RSS feeds.
  6. An overlay window will display to configure the block settings.
  7. Check the box alongside Add new RSS feed
  8. Paste the RSS feed into the RSS link input field.
  9. Add a Title for the feed.
  10. Choose whether to Show descriptions for entries. This will take up more space on your module, but will help students understand the relevance of the link.
  11. Set a number for the setting Entries to display. We recommend no more than 5 items to ensure that students can easily navigate the block.
  12. You can choose to Show source link and to Show the channel image if available by selecting Yes for these settings.
  13. Select Save Changes.

Add/Change RSS feed

Delete a feed

  1. Turn Edit mode on and open the Block drawer. The RSS feeds block will be added to the bottom of the Block drawer.
  2. Select the Manage RSS feeds button.
  3. Select the bin icon alongside the feed to delete.
  4. A confirmation message displays. Select Yes to confirm.

Add a feed

  1. Turn Edit mode on and open the Block drawer. The RSS feeds block will be added to the bottom of the Block drawer.
  2. Select the Manage RSS feeds button.
  3. Select the Add a new feed button.
  4. Paste your RSS Feed into the RSS link input field, and if you want to change the name of the feed, add a title in the Custom Title box (if required).
  5. Select the Add a new feed button.
  6. Select Module from the contextual navigation menu to return to the module homepage.
  7. Next you need to display the feed.

Display feed

  1. With Edit mode on, open the Block drawer.
  2. Open the three dot menu on the block and select Configure Remote news feed block.
  3. From the Choose the feeds which you would like to make available in this block, select the relevant feed.
  4. Add the Title for the feed,
  5. Choose whether to Show descriptions for entries. This will take up more space on your module, but will help students understand the relevance of the link.
