Find out how you can use Blocks to provide additional functionality and content to your module.

About Remote RSS feeds block

A Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed, is a quick way of integrating content from a a blog, or news feed. It is harder to find RSS feeds these days. Feeds from BBC are still easy to find and use. 

Copy RSS feed

  1. Search for an RSS feed you want to use. 
  2. You may get an option to select the category that you want a feed from.
  3. Copy the URL which has rss.xml at the end of the address.

Adding the Remote RSS Feeds Block to Your Module

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open the Block drawer on the right of the module.
  3. Select Add a block.
  4. An overlay window opens displaying available blocks.
  5. Select Remote RSS feeds.
  6. The RSS feeds block will be added to the bottom of the Block drawer.

Configure the Remote RSS feeds block

You will first need to add Feeds to the block and you can then select a Feed to display to students via the block.

Add a Feed

  1. Turn Edit mode on.
  2. Open the Block drawer on the right of the module.
  3. Scroll to the Remote RSS feed block block.
  4. Select the settings cog icon on the RSS Feed Block followed by Configure Remote news feed block.
  5. Scroll down to the select Add/edit feeds link.
  6. Select Add a new feed.
  7. Paste your RSS Feed into the Feed URL box, and if you want to change the name of the feed, add a title in the Custom Title box (if required).
  8. Select the Add a new feed button.
  9. Select Module from the contextual navigation menu to return to the module homepage.

Display a Feed

  1. With Edit mode on, open the Block drawer.
  2. Select the settings cog icon on the block and select Configure Remote news feed block.
  3. Choose if you want the description to be shown from your feeds in the Display each links description? field, this will take up more space on your module, but will help students understand the relevance of the link.
  4. Set the Max number of entries to show per block that you would like to show. We recommend no more than 5 items to ensure that students can easily navigate the block.
  5. From the Choose the feeds which you would like to make available in this block, select the relevant feed.
  6. You can choose to Show a link to the original site and to Show the channel image if available by selecting Yes for these settings.
  7. Select Save Changes.
