The MILL and TV Studio

This guide will explain the capabilities of the MILL and TV studio

About the microphone

The microphone is very high quality and is ideal for voice recording or for web conferencing. It sits in a cradle to avoid sounds of knocks and has a protect pop filter to avoid breath sounds.

The Scarlett interface box

The microphone is attached to the computer via a red Scarlett interface box. This converts the audio into a digital form the computer can understand.

This interface box allows you to control the recording level of the microphone. It also allows you to monitor the sound from the microphone through headphones in real time as you talk (without any delay) and to listen to sound from the computer.

The Scarlett audio interface controls

In most cases, you won't need to adjust the controls on the interface unit. But if you do, only adjust the ones listed below.

In all cases, if you are using the professional microphone you must select the Scarlett Interface as your recording source on the computer.

  1. Gain control for the microphone. This increases / reduces the volume of the microphone, making your voice louder / quieter. The ideal setting is around 75-85%, but it may need to be changed if your voice is particularly loud / quiet or you are further away / nearer.
  2. Direct Monitor switch. When on, this allows you to hear sound from the computer as well as any audio from the microphone. When off, you won't hear any computer audio.
  3. Headphone Level dial. This controls the volume coming from the headphones.

Recording technique

  1. Do not sit too far or too close to the microphone. You want to avoid you sounding too far away or spikes where the volume is too high. 12-18 inches away is the most suitable.
  2. Keep the pop filter in place - this will eliminate pop noises from your breath on sounds like 'p'.
  3. Keep the gain control on the interface box at around 75-85%. Again, too low and the recording will be too low. Too high, and it could lead to distortion.
  4. Try not to tap / knock the table and these sounds will be picked up
  5. Whenever possible, record using headphones. It will help you focus on your recording and the tone / sound of your voice. You'll also find it easier to hear any distracting noises like people talking in the background, doors opening / closing, air conditioning, etc.

Selecting an audio source

You can select different sources for recording / playing audio from the computer. Recording sources include the webcam and the Scarlett Audio Interface, and output sources include the speakers and the Scarlett Audio Interface. Pick the ones which are required.
