The MILL and TV Studio

This guide will explain the capabilities of the MILL and TV studio

Set up the Sony camcorder

  1. Attach the battery to the back of the camera: line up the battery with the indentations and slide upwards.
  2. Open up the SD card flap near on the left-hand side of the camera and insert the supplied SD card into one of the slots. The label should be facing the back of the camera and the cut corner should be at the bottom-right.

Mount the camera onto the tripod

  1. Remove the mounting plate from the camera by pulling the handle underneath it to the left.

  2. Line up the mounting plate with the holes at the bottom of the camera and screw it into place using the silver handle at the bottom of the mounting plate.

  3. Place the camera, with the mounting plate attached, onto the tripod and move the handle back into place.

Microphone and audio setup

  1. Attach the wireless microphone receiver to either of the silver plates at the top of the camera. Slide it from back to front as indicated by the arrow and screw the receiver into place using the disc at the bottom of the receiver.
  2. Plug the XLR cable into the Input 1 port at the front-right of the camera.
  3. Plug the supplied headphones into the headphone port.
  4. Change the audio settings on the camera in order to use the lapel mic:-
    1. Press the Menu button at the front-left of the camera. You can navigate the menu by using the joystick at the back of the camera.
    2. From the Menu, scroll down to Audio Select and then Mic Select.
    3. Then select Auto.
  5. To turn on both the mic receiver and the mic transmitter. To do this, open the front cover and press the ON/OFF button.
  6. Attach the mic from the mic receiver to the person you are filming.

 

Turn the camera on

To turn the camera on, open the LCD screen on the left of the camera.

If for any reason, the camera does not turn on, use the power button on the left of the camera.

Set up the camera for your recording

  • Ensure that the camera is set to Auto mode, you will find this button at the back-left of the camera. The Auto setting means that your camera will automatically set the focus, light level and white balance for you.
  • Ensure that the ND Filter is set to Clear. You will find this setting under the Auto setting.
  • Also ensure that the AF/MF setting is set to AF. This means that the camera will automatically focus on faces. You will know that this is set to AF when you see a green square around the face of the person you are filming.

 

Record

  1. To start your recording, press the record button (marked in red). One can be found at the back-right of the camera. There is also another recording button at the top of the camera. Make sure you can see a red REC sign on the LCD screen to be sure that you are recording
  2. Use the zoom rocker switch to zoom in and out (marked in blue). You will find two sets on top of the camera.

Review your footage

  1. To review your footage, select the Thumbnail button on the left of the camera. 
  2. You will then see a list of your clips on the LCD screen.
  3. Select a clip to review by touching it on the LCD screen.
  4. Select the Thumbnail button again to go back to record mode.
